Discover the photogenic Goshikinuma!
In mid-December, I went on a day trip to Ura Bandai, Fukushima, using a weekday holiday.
The purpose this time is to go to Goshikinuma, which is famous as a scenic spot in Fukushima.”It is a spot where the water of various colors shines from each swamp, and it is read as “”Goshikinuma””.”If you use public transportation, it takes about 35 minutes by bus from Inawashiro Station on the JR Banetsu Sai Line or about 1 hour and 5 minutes by bus from Kitakata Station on the JR Banetsu Sai Line.
From the east, it is dotted with Bishamonnuma, Akanuma, Midoronuma, Tatsunuma, Bentennuma, Aonuma, Rurinuma and Yanaginuma, and ‘Goshikinuma’ is a general term for the lake group.”The 3.6km-long “”Goshikinuma Nature Exploration Road”” connects the “”Goshikinuma Entrance”” bus stop on the Inawashiro station side and the “”Ura Bandai Kogen Station”” bus stop on the Kitakata station side, making it a hiking trail for beginners to walk.”
Ura Bandai Visitor Center
The Ura Bandai Visitor Center is right next to the Goshikinuma Entrance bus stop, which displays and explains the nature of Ura Bandai, animals and plants, and the formation of Goshikinuma due to the eruption of Mount Kobandai. We also explained why the water surface of Goshikinuma Lake Group shines brightly using experimental equipment, so we will quote the part described in the data below.
The colors of blue, red, and green water you can see when you walk along the Goshikinuma Nature Trail. It’s like melting paint. This is because white particles called “allophene” floating in the water and iron oxide deposited at the bottom of the water are scattered or reflected by the sun’s light, making it look like a variety of colors. It looks blue or green when scattered by allophen and red when reflected by precipitate of iron oxide.
Such substances are created because acid water flowing from the copper swamp at the crater of Bandai Mountain changes water quality by mixing alkaline spring water while flowing to Rurinuma, Aonuma, Bentenuma, Ryunuma, Midoronuma, and Bishamonuma.A subtle color change occurs due to the mixing of different kinds of water.
“Recently, I’ve found out that the reason for the color change is not allophen!” “For more information, please contact the staff.” Please ask the staff.
If you search for Goshikinuma in various media, the beautiful pictures of Goshikinuma are all taken from spring to autumn. The vegetation of Goshikinuma is classified from spring to autumn in the Ura Bandai Visitor Center, and there was no winter.”Also, the walking course at “”Ura Bandai Lake Resort”” runs from April to late November.”What is the view of Goshikinuma like in winter? Can you walk in the first place?I decided on my itinerary without thinking too much.
Time required from Tokyo to Goshikinuma
As for the movement from Tokyo, I wanted to take a nap on the way this time, so I took the expressway bus. It’s the JR expressway bus “Yume Kaido Aizu.”
The time schedule starts at 7:30 Busta Shinjuku and arrives at JR Inawashiro Station at 11:44. The last stop is a four-row seat service at JR Aizuwakamatsu Station.”I made a reservation online for 2810 yen, but there are already passengers next to me even though there are many vacant seats.”
The driver allowed me to share a seat instead of a discount, but there were few passengers and many seats available at the next Oji station in Shinjuku. It was a weekday outbound flight, so there were about 10 passengers. There is a USB port next to the seat, so you can charge it.Personally, I especially like JR buses because they have compatible seats.
If you take the Shinkansen from Tokyo, take the Tohoku Shinkansen Yamabiko to Koriyama, and then take the JR Banetsu Sai Line to Inawashiro Station. If you take the train at 6:40 from Tokyo Station, you will arrive at Inawashiro Station at 9:08, and if you take the train one later, you will arrive at Inawashiro Station at 10:24 from Tokyo at 7:44.The fare is 8430 yen, which is exactly triple, but in fact, this is more economical. What is the reason?
Bus timetable from Inawashiro and Kitakata stations to Goshikinuma
We arrived at Inawashiro Station almost on time at 11:40.
It was very nice and warm, but the snow is piled up.It’s piled up more than I thought. When I asked at the tourist information center in front of the station if I could walk on the Goshikinuma Nature Exploration Road, they told me that boots can be rented at the Ura Bandai Visitor Center. The Inawashiro Station Tourist Information Center was very kind and told me that it would be difficult to move from one side to the other on the scenic route with this snow.
The location relationship between Goshikinuma and the bus stop (from the Ura Bandai Lake Resort website) shows that the bus stop on the east side where the visitor center is located is Goshikinuma Entrance, and the bus stop on the west side is Ura Bandai Kogen Station.
The bus bound for Goshikinuma Entrance from Inawashiro Station uses Bandai Toto Bus.However, the number of buses will decrease between December and March, and after Inawashiro Station at 10:35 PM, it will be 1:35 pm.Considering that the visitor center is open until 16:00 in winter (December to March) (until 17:00 in summer), and the time of the return train, it is not realistic to wait for the 13:35 bus.
The reason why you said that the Shinkansen is cheap is because the timetable of the winter bus is considered to be linked to the arrival and departure of JR Inawashiro Station. Therefore, if you arrive at Inawashiro at 10:24, you can take the 10:35 bus. Also, if you arrive in Koriyama or Aizuwakamatsu early in the morning by night bus, you can go to Kitakata Station by JR and take the Kitakata 9:00 bus.
I took a taxi from Inawashiro Station, and the fare was 4930 yen.The bus route from Inawashiro Station to Goshikinuma Entrance is 790 yen.Kitakata Station – Ura Bandai Kogen Station is 1260 yen, and Kitakata Station – Goshikinuma Entrance is 1360 yen.
Regarding the winter travel model plan from Tokyo, I will write it down at the end.
Step on the snow and go to Bishamonuma
When I arrived at the Ura Bandai Visitor Center, a staff member lent me boots. The rental fee is 500 yen. The compensation fee of 200 yen will be back when you return it, so it’s actually 300 yen.You can also rent snowshoes. The rental page is here.
As I found out after visiting, it is impossible to wear regular shoes and boots in winter. If you don’t bring them, you need to rent boots or snowshoes, so you need to visit the visitor center on your way back and forth. This time, it was impossible to go back and forth in time, so I chose to go back in the middle.
It’s the view outside the visitor center.Snow is all over the place. I’m going to Bishamonuma along the ditch on the left.
On the information board, there is a wide area map of the natural scenic route and the area around Ura Bandai.
It left at 12:20.The bus bound for Goshikinuma leaves at 14:05 at Ura Bandai Kogen Station, so you have to cross the snowy road in one hour and 40 minutes. This time, I decided to go back to Akanuma. It’s about 2 kilometers each way.
When I stepped into the snow… I was wearing boots, but it was deeper than that.Snow got in through a gap in my boots, and as a result, my socks got wet to the skin.
If you go a little further from the starting point, the road will be divided into two.”If you go straight, you can go around the side of Bishamonnuma, but this time the snow was so high that you couldn’t go from there.”There was a ditch on the right side where people passed, so I’ll head for Bishamonuma from the right side.
Walk on the dug and hardened ditch. On the way, there are several log houses on the right that seem to be campsites, and around there, you take a narrow road to the left and go down to the Bishamonuma side.
It’s the contrast between the cottages and the snow that are likely to appear in the detective animation Snow Mountain Incident. After walking for about 5 minutes, you can see Bishamonnuma.
Emerald Blue of Bishamon-numa
It’s been 25 minutes since we left.I arrived at Bishamon-numa.
Is it called cobalt blue?Or is it emerald green?Bishamon-numa shines in the middle of the silver world under the sunlight.During the period from April to November, rental boats are available every 30 minutes (700 yen/30 minutes per boat), and you can enjoy the fresh greenery and autumn leaves of the lake. This December, waterfowl swam leisurely in the white tranquility.
I can’t help but say exclamation words. It’s a view that makes me really happy to be here. This is the eastern end of Bishamonnuma, but there was no way to walk along the marsh bank, so I went back and took the road in front of the campground to the west.
This is one of the campground facilities that I saw on the right side of the road. There are no footprints at this time of year.
There was a bear warning sign near the information board. At Ura Bandai, sightings of black bears were reported, and there was a notice at the visitor center asking bears to show their presence with bear bells.
Crunch through the snowy road, Bishamon-numa reappears under your left eye. It’s nice to see from above.
I got the impression that it was closer to the green than when I saw it earlier.Maybe it was because there were a few clouds.Of course, I couldn’t sit down because of the accumulated snow, but there was a bench where the pillars of Bishamon-numa stood.
A white field of vision will be opened again. The slope was a little downward, but there were traces of snowshoes passing through the road at the foot.I was able to move at a run because the footing was strong.
Once again, Bishamonnuma is on the left.I will walk from a low point of view this time. However, please be careful because you can easily get caught on the snowy road while looking at the swamp.
The other side looks like this. The color seems to change considerably depending on the water temperature. It’s profound.
Bishamon-numa is updated frequently on the visitor center’s website. As an amateur, there is more information about Goshikinuma that is easier to understand and more detailed than writing here, so please check out the information about Bishamon-numa and trekking courses.
When you come to the west end of Bishamonnuma, you cross a small bridge and cross the swamp. The Bishamon-numa side is emerald green, but the color has changed since the reed group in front of it.
Yellow-green? Uguis color?”Mysterious “”Akanuma”””
After Bishamon-numa, it is Akanuma which was set as the halfway point this time.I ran quite a bit in the middle, so I walked 1.5 kilometers on snowy roads in about 40 minutes.
Akanuma, Midoronuma, and Ryunuma are also located on the right side of the scenic route. We passed through Bishamonnuma and reached Akanuma in about 10 minutes.
I wanted to get closer to the swamp, but I gave up because of the deep snow.
In the very small Akanuma, iron components are attached to the vegetation and trees around the swamp, so the swamp shore looks like red rust. When I searched the image, I found that matcha and cobalt blue were edged with beautiful reddish brown. When I visited December, I used paint to mix green and brown and cast a mysterious yellow color. Can you see from the image that the color of the periphery is somewhat different…?
It’s amazing because it’s transparent. In the end, it takes 1 hour and 10 minutes to take a picture.
I regret that I could go to Midoronuma and Ryunuma now, but I lost a lot of strength and thought it would be safe to go back considering that there was only about an hour left until the bus left.
At the end of Akanuma, the left and right sides were snowy roads of forests.
I will go back through Bishamonnuma again. The reflection was beautiful.
I arrived in about 30 minutes because I knew the way home, didn’t take many pictures, and took a “shortcut” from the campsite to the visitor center. However, it seems that this “shortcut” was to travel over the wetlands, and on the way, I fell into the snow (swamp) up to my thighs.I’d like to go check when it gets warmer in the season when there’s no snow.
Arrived at the visitor’s center at exactly 14:00 and had a hard time taking it off because there was a lot of snow in the boots.I changed wet socks and warmed myself up in the stove by the shoe rental counter.Thank you to the visitor center.
Take the 14:44 bus bound for Inawashiro Station to Inawashiro Station. The fare is 770 yen and it takes about 40 minutes.I ate Tanmen written as a popular menu at Ichimatsu-san near the station and went back to Koriyama by the Iwakoshi Nishi Line at 16:51.
One-day trip plan from Tokyo to Goshikinuma (winter)
The calculation was based on the number of buses and the closing time of the Ura Bandai Visitor Center (16:00).In summer, there are many buses, and there are many more options because there are buses that go directly from Inawashiro Station to Ura Bandai Kogen Station.
Starting at Ura Bandai Kogen Station
It is the time to depart from Ura Bandai Kogen Station. It’s a pattern when you don’t need to rent boots or snowshoes from a visitor center.
Departure from Ura Bandai Kogen Station (Weekdays)
Tokyo 7:44 → (Tohoku Shinkansen bound for Sendai) Koriyama 9:23
Koriyama 9:38 → (Iwanagoe Nishi Line, bound for Aizuwakamatsu, JR total 8580 yen) Inawashiro 10:24
Inawashiro 10:35→ (Bandai Toto Bus, bound for Ura Bandai Kogen Station, 910 Yen) Ura Bandai Kogen Station 11:20
Yanaginuma → Aonuma, Rurinuma → Bentenuma → Ryunuma → Midoronuma → Akanuma → Bishamon-numa
Goshikinuma Entrance 14:46 or 17:06 → (Bandai Toto Bus, bound for Inawashiro Station, ¥790) Inawashiro Station 15:32 or 17:52
You can’t connect with the bus that arrives at 17:52 of Bandai Toto Bus, but expressway buses that depart from Inawashiro Station at 17:30 depart from Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, and Oji.It’s a route that can be cheaper than the return route of Shinkansen and expressway buses via Koriyama. If you choose a night bus such as Tokyo → Koriyama or Aizuwakamatsu to Inawashiro Station, you can take a bus leaving Inawashiro Station at 8:15, and arrive at Ura Bandai Kogen Station at 9:00.
Starting at Goshikinuma entrance
Departure from Goshikinuma Entrance (Weekdays) Tokyo 7:44 → (Tohoku Shinkansen/Sendai) Koriyama 9:23
Koriyama 9:38 → (Iwanagoe Nishi Line, bound for Aizuwakamatsu, JR total 8580 yen) Inawashiro 10:24
Inawashiro 10:35 → (Bandai Toto Bus, bound for Ura Bandai Kogen Station, ¥790) Goshikinuma Entrance 11:13
Bishamon-numa → Akanuma → Midoronuma → Ryunuma → Bentenuma → Aonuma, Rurinuma → Yanaginuma
Ura Bandai Kogen Station 14:38 or 14:40 → (Bandai Toto Bus, Kitakata or Inawashiro, 250 yen) Goshikinuma Entrance 14:43 or 14:46
Return shoes at the visitor center → Goshikinuma entrance 15:41 → (Bandai Toto bus, Kitakata, 1360 yen) → Kitakata 17:00
This is the case of renting shoes at the visitor center.I mean, I think it will take this shape first if there is snow.People who bring boots with them will first move by car.
The key to this transfer is the bus that goes back to Goshikinuma entrance from Ura Bandai Kogen Station. If I can’t get on this, I won’t be able to go back because it will be in the 5 o’clock range next time.
There is a hotel near Ura Bandai Kogen Station, so if you find a taxi, you can take a taxi back to the visitor center by four o’clock in the afternoon.Like the above two, if you go to Fukushima by night bus, you can take the first bus from Inawashiro Station, so you will have plenty of time to take a walk along the scenic route.
This will be returned at the visitor’s center through Kitakata.
If you want to go back to Inawashiro Station from Goshikinuma entrance, you have to wait until 17:00 (this is cheaper in terms of fare).
It is recommended for those who want to go home by night bus or Shinkansen after eating local specialties in Kitakata.Just like the first one, if you go to Fukushima by night bus, you can take an earlier bus from Inawashiro Station.
If you take a picture and travel along the Goshikinuma Sightseeing Trail, you should wait for two and a half to three hours.
Snow roads take twice as long as summer, and if the weather is bad, they may be stopped.
If you have any questions or concerns, please ask the staff at the visitor center staff.
It’s a tough road, but the Goshikinuma Lake complex in the silver world is very beautiful. If you are confident in your physical strength as well as staying overnight, why not try a day trip?
